Scopes Monkey Trial Documentary
The Roaring Twenties Documentary- The Century: Americas's Time- 1920-1929: Boom to Bust
Iron Jawed Angels
This film provides a powerful insight into the actions of several women activists who risked so much to gain the right to vote for all women and to do so as a Constitutional Amendment. The Amendment guarantees that states cannot revoke or interfere with this right. You will need to be looking for answers to the following four questions as you watch and will answer them in a google-doc after viewing the film and will share this work with Mr. Waddell.
1.) The film makers decided to include several fictional characters, (Ben Weissman, Emily Leighton, Tom Leighton, and others). Why do you think these characters were included? How do they help advance the story, or do they detract from it?
2.) The film gives us the impression that Carrie Chapman Catt was an obstacle to the Constitutional Amendment and some would say they even make her out to be a villain of sorts in parts of the film. Why is this depiction of her problematic?
3.) Why do you think that many Americans have no idea what was involved in the fight for women's suffrage and what problems does this lack of knowledge create in our modern society?
4.) What connections do you see in the film between the actions of the suffragists and the ideas of Henry David Thoreau?
This film includes two scenes that we skip when we show it in class. The first one is skipped due to some non-nudity intimacy, the other one includes some nudity but it takes place during a scene in which prisoners are deloused in prison. Please feel free to skip these scenes. The times to pause and fast forward to are listed below.
Scene1- pause at 49:00 in, then skip to and play at 52:08
Scene 2- pause at 1:20:46 in, then skip to and play at 1:21:20

Art Friday- March 27th, ART DECO
Below is a link to a reading on art deco which is well done and includes several beautiful examples. Please read this and enjoy. Then I have a short documentary from a tv station in Palm Beach, Florida that is about 20 years old, so forgive the local and dated nature of it. Despite this it is really informative and includes some great examples as well. Lastly, I encourage you to to do a Google-Image search with the words "art deco spokane" and enjoy seeing some local examples of this style. Happy Friday!

Early-American (Pre Columbian) Native America
You will read the section entitled "II The First Americans" from "Chapter 1- The New World" in the American Yawp textbook. The section is fairly long so I have broken it into 2 chunks. The first chunk, due tomorrow, runs from the the beginning of section II and stops at the picture of Pueblo Anasazi in Chaco Canyon. If you start reading the paragraph that begins with "Chaco Canyon in northern New Mexico was home to ancestral..." you have gone too far for the first part. The second part starts just past that image with the sentence from above and runs to the end of the section. This is due on Friday. You will likely see a reading check on one or both sections, if you take notes you may use them. The link is below

Now is time to complete Ch. 1, Section 2 "The New World"
You will not have a reading check on this second part, however you will need to answer some questions as you go. Below is a link to a google doc. You can either write your answers on a clean sheet of notebook paper or if you prefer you can save a copy of this document to your drive and type your answers BUT you must print it and turn it in, do not share it with me digitally.

US Imperialism
Below are a series of resources to prepare you for a primary source document evaluation. Tomorrow in class you will be given a series of primary source documents to explain and analyze. These may be a speech from a politician from this era, a political cartoon, a map, etc. and you will need to respond to series of questions about each item. You will need to provide sufficient details in your answers to demonstrate your knowledge of this time period, the motivations for American Imperialism, who opposed it and why, and if your document references a specific place you will need to be able to discuss some of the specifics concerning this location, (look for details specifically for the Philippines, Hawaii, Panama, Cuba, & China). Any and all notes you take between now and the start of class tomorrow will be available to you. You can even build some shared notes on a google doc BUT THEY MUST BE PRINTED BEFORE THE START OF CLASS IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO USE THEM!!!
